A typical kitchen backsplash is 15 to 30 square feet. Count tiles with the grout joint included and buy extra for cuts and breaks.

Enter the area and the tile size.
The math
Each tile plus its grout joint covers (length + joint) x (width + joint). Divide the area by that, add 10% for straight layouts (15% or more for diagonal or herringbone) and round up to whole boxes.
Measuring a backsplash
Measure each section between the counter and the upper cabinets, and subtract large openings like a window. Outlets are small enough to ignore; tiles are cut around them.
