Curtain Lengths Explained: 63, 84, 95, 108 or 120 Inches?

Most mistakes come from measuring the window instead of the distance from the rod to the floor.

Standard lengths

Length Usually for
63 in Sill or just below the sill on standard windows
84 in Floor length with 8 ft ceilings and the rod 4 to 6 in above the frame
95 or 96 in Floor length with the rod hung higher, or 9 ft ceilings
108 in 9 to 10 ft ceilings, rods near the ceiling
120 in Tall ceilings and two-story rooms

How to measure

  1. Decide where the rod goes: at least 4 to 6 inches above the frame.
  2. Measure from the top of the rod to the floor.
  3. Take off half an inch for curtains that float just above the floor, add about 1 inch to just touch it, or 6 to 8 inches to puddle.
  4. Check how the curtain hangs: rings, grommets and tabs change where the fabric starts.
